Master's thesis

Freedom of choice and narration
in video game

For a few years now, video games have been based on decision making. Indeed, theses games offer a strong narrative in which the player is led to make choices, choices that will have an impact on the course of the story. Today they represent such a market, that it is itself questioned. Are the choices offered in this kind of game illusory? Is it possible to reconcile video games, freedom of choice and narration? To what extent and by what means? The following are the issues that we will address in this thesis.

Our final goal is to determine the concrete models that we can apply, the tools with which we can play, to mix narrative and freedom of choice effectively. For this reason, it is essential to get to the heart of the problem before even thinking about scenario, gameplay or artistic direction, we need to understand the fundamental mechanisms behind video games and narration.
